Is Peripera Cruelty-Free and Vegan in 2023?

The latest and hottest makeup trends at a reasonable price are Peripera’s thing, but apparently, 100% cruelty-free and vegan policies aren’t.

Peripera is not 100% cruelty-free or vegan as its products are sold where animal testing is required by law. It also cannot be considered vegan as it is not cruelty-free.
Peripera’s parent company, CLIO cosmetics, launched the brand in 2005 to create playful and youthful cosmetics that not only follow trends but create them.

Many of Peripera’s products have become viral hits, like their Ink Velvet Lip Tint. And for a while now Peripera was on many cruelty-free lists, but as of 2021 the brand quietly slid into the Chinese market which left many confused.

This brand is far from transparent. Fun and innovative products aren’t enough to hide their serious lack of ethical and sustainability policies.

Does Peripera Test on Animals?

Peripera used to be considered 100% cruelty-free, but things have changed, and it’s causing some confusion.

Simply put, in 2021, when China removed the requirement of pre-market testing for certain products, we’ve seen an influx of cruelty-free brands entering the Chinese market, and Peripera is one of those brands.

This sounds great, right? Nope, it’s not that simple.

The confusion comes in when you learn that just because there is no longer mandatory pre-market testing for certain products entering the Chinese border, this doesn’t mean animal testing is banned.

Just because it’s no longer mandatory doesn’t mean it can’t still happen. It’s a slippery slope, any cruelty-free brand selling in China claiming to be cruelty-free can’t without a doubt ensure their products won’t be tested. For that reason, they can’t be considered 100% cruelty-free.

What Is Peripera’s Cruelty-Free Status in 2023?

Peripera has no official statement regarding its cruelty-free policies and vegan products on its website or social media. After reaching out, we still haven’t received a response from the brand.

If anything changes or if Peripera responds, we will update the article.

Peripera Has No Cruelty-Free Certification

It's unlikely Peripera will get any cruelty-free certification anytime soon when they can’t be considered 100% cruelty-free anymore.

Peripera had flimsy claims to being cruelty-free, to begin with, and with the brand entering the Chinese market, they have solidified their status in our eyes.

For them to truly be seen as cruelty-free, they have some work to do, and that includes getting certification from preferably Leaping Bunny or PETA

Leaping Bunny certification proves that:

  • No animal testing is conducted on the ingredients, formulas, or final products they sell.
  • No animal testing is conducted by the brand suppliers or on their ingredients or formulas.
  • No animal testing is done by someone else that the company itself paid for.
  • Any other form of testing (beyond ingredient and consumer safety), such as worker safety and environmental health, is considered and evaluated.

Is Peripera Sold Where Animal Testing is Required By Law?

Yes, Peripera distributes its products in China, where animal testing on cosmetics is required as products arrive at the border.

China has a shocking track record. It is the country with the most animal testing globally, with over 20 million animals used per year.

However, if you live in China or are concerned about its cruel beauty policies, there are a couple of loopholes.

Here's how to find cruelty-free cosmetics in China: Are Cosmetics Made in China Cruelty-Free?

Peripera is Not Vegan

Peripera may have formulas free from animal-derived ingredients, but none can be considered holistically vegan.

When brands like Peripera willingly allow their products to be sold in mainland China where animal testing is required, they can no longer be considered cruelty-free.

Does it have products that are free of animal-derived ingredients? Yes.

Are these products considered holistically vegan? Not in our opinion.

Peripera is Not Considered Natural, and Organic

Peripera wants to enhance “natural” beauty, but they don’t use many naturally derived ingredients to do it. While you might see a couple of ingredients you recognize in the ingredient lists, the vast majority are synthetic.

All products use a certain amount of synthetic ingredients in their formulas. Peripera is no exception – but it does choose to use better or clean synthetics.

If a synthetic ingredient is "clean," it means it is safe and non-toxic for us. Its purpose is to preserve the stability of a beauty formulation.

Peripera Has A 91% Allergen-Free Ranking

According to Skin Safe, Peripera has a 91% allergen-free ranking for three products.

Many of Peripera products are free of allergens such as gluten, coconut, nickel, top common allergy-causing preservatives, lanolin, paraben, topical antibiotic, MCI/MI, soy, and SLS.

Reading the ingredient list is crucial because Peripera is not 100% hypoallergenic or non-comedogenic, and they do not claim to be.

However, certain products are specifically for these concerns, so make sure you buy what your skin needs.

The EU/UK Have Stricter Ingredient Regulations

We don’t want to scare you, but you HAVE to read up on any product’s ingredient list before you make a purchase – especially if you live within the United States. The reason why will shock you.

The FDA has only banned or restricted 11 harmful chemicals from cosmetics within the country. Europe and the UK, on the other hand, have banned 1,328!

With skincare and cosmetics, you want to avoid these ingredients:

  • Ethoxylated ingredients (PPG, PEG, and polysorbate)
  • Ethanolamine compounds (DEA, MEA, and TEA)
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, aka teflon®)
  • Propylene glycol (pg) & butylene glycol
  • DMDM Hydantoin
  • Triclosan

Peripera Is Not Sustainable and Ethical

Peripera doesn’t have a history of supporting any ethical causes.

It's no secret that the world has a huge waste problem, and cosmetic brands only make it worse by using unsustainable packaging and harmful ingredients.

When it comes to sustainability initiatives, Peripera has nothing to share. You won’t find any mention of environmental or ethical policies on their website or social media.

Final Thoughts

Does Peripera have any policies or initiatives that make them worth buying? Not any we can find.

Effective formulas aren’t enough to make a brand worth supporting, there are just too many alternative brands out there that are taking more factors into consideration.

Peripera has to put some effort into being transparent and putting in the work to be more ethically and environmentally conscious.

They aren’t even close to being a brand worth recommending. As buyers, we hold the power to decide who is worth supporting, we decide what we will and won’t tolerate.
