Is By Wishtrend Cruelty-Free and Vegan in 2023?

By Wishtrend was built by a company that saw where other brands were letting down their customers. But did they learn enough and make themselves cruelty-free and vegan too?

By Wishtrend is cruelty-free but not 100% vegan, meaning some products contain animal-derived ingredients. It does not conduct animal testing on its products or distribute cosmetics where animal testing is required by law.
Before By Wishtrend came around, Wishtrend began as an E-commerce site for other cruelty-free Korean skincare brands.

After learning from their customer's concerns, the company started By Wishtrend. The brand is focused on innovative skincare that is free from harmful ingredients, all while keeping ethical concerns in mind.

The best part is that By Wishtrend is one of the few Korean skincare brands that are truly cruelty-free with certification. Unfortunately, when it comes to their vegan policies – they aren’t quite there yet.

By Wishtrend has always been against testing on animals, and they don’t plan to stop anytime soon.

The brand also doesn’t ship to countries that require it, like China.

What Is By Wishtrend’s Cruelty-Free Status in 2023?

Here is a screenshot of By Wishtrend’s official statement regarding its cruelty-free policies and vegan products, taken from its website:

By Wishtrend is PETA Certified

By Wishtrend has made its policy more credible by getting PETA certification.

Of course, PETA is a great start for any cruelty-free brand, but ideally, we’d like to see a Leaping Bunny certification.

While you might know PETA very well – it surprisingly doesn't hold the strictest cruelty-free regulations. Leaping Bunny certification is the gold standard to live up to.

Is Wishtrend Sold Where Animal Testing is Required By Law?

By Wishtrend does not distribute any of its products to China or any country that requires animal testing on cosmetics by law.

China has a shocking track record. It is the country with the most animal testing globally, with over 20 million animals used per year.

However, if you live in China or are concerned about its cruel beauty policies, there are a couple of loopholes.

By Wishtrend is Not Considered Natural, and Organic

By Wishtrend may have some naturally derived ingredients, but their focus has always been formulating synergistic and effective ingredients to create products that give all the results without any harmful ingredients.

All products use a certain amount of synthetic ingredients in their formulas. BY Wishtrend is no exception – but it does choose to use better or clean synthetics.

If a synthetic ingredient is "clean," it means it is safe and non-toxic for us. Its purpose is to preserve the stability of a beauty formulation.

By Wishtrend Has A 91 – 100%) Allergen-Free Ranking

According to Skin Safe, By Wishtrend has a 91 – 100% allergen-free ranking for the two products they list.

Many of By Wishtrend’s products are free of allergens such as fragrance, gluten, coconut, nickel, top common allergy-causing preservatives, lanolin, paraben, topical antibiotic, MCI/MI, soy, propylene glycol, balsam of Peru, oil, irritant/acid, dye, and SLS.

Reading the ingredient list is crucial because By Wishtrend is not 100% hypoallergenic or non-comedogenic, and they do not claim to be.

However, certain products are specifically for these concerns, so make sure you buy what your skin needs.

The EU/UK Have Stricter Ingredient Regulations

We don’t want to scare you, but you HAVE to read up on any product’s ingredient list before you make a purchase – especially if you live within the United States. The reason why will shock you.

The FDA has only banned or restricted 11 harmful chemicals from cosmetics within the country. Europe and the UK, on the other hand, have banned 1,328!

Luckily, By Wishtrend sets a great example of what true clean beauty is meant to be, and you shouldn’t have to worry about any serious hidden nasties in its products.

With skincare and cosmetics, you want to avoid these ingredients:

  • Ethoxylated ingredients (PPG, PEG, and polysorbate)
  • Ethanolamine compounds (DEA, MEA, and TEA)
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, aka teflon®)
  • Propylene glycol (pg) & butylene glycol
  • DMDM Hydantoin
  • Triclosan

By Wishtrend Is Moderately Sustainable and Ethical

By Wishtrend doesn’t have any ethical causes they support that they’ve publically shared.

It's no secret that the world has a huge waste problem, and cosmetic brands only make it worse by using unsustainable packaging and harmful ingredients.

By Wishtrend takes environmental accountability by:

  • Developing formulas that are kinder to the environment.
  • Working on sustainable packaging developments.
  • Encouraging consumers to recycle their products.
  • Reducing their use of virgin plastic in their product and shipping packaging with partly recycled glass bottles, PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastic tubes, bottles, pumps, and caps.
  • Using sustainably sourced paper (FSC certified) and soy ink printing to create its packaging.

Final Thoughts

By Wishtrend says they are learning from what they see consumers want, which is partly true.

Coming from a parent company that sells skincare from multiple brands, By Wishtrend had a start many other brands could benefit from, and that’s an inside look at the skin concerns and complaints of multiple brands' products.

Currently, the brand is 100% cruelty-free which can’t be said for many Korean skincare brands. They have a basic certification from PETA which we would love to see turn into a Leaping Bunny certification.

Beyond their ethical policies, they have some work to do on their social causes and sustainability. They acknowledge the importance of sustainability initiatives, and they have things very slowly in the works. But right now, there’s only the minimum happening.

The brand is growing steadily, and with that growth, it’ll be interesting to see how they change and adapt, keep an eye on this one!
