Sioris makes skincare that is made with seasonal, home-grown ingredients. Being clean and sustainable is at the brand's core, but what about its cruelty-free and vegan policies?

Sioris is cruelty-free but not 100% vegan, meaning some products contain animal-derived ingredients. It does not conduct animal testing on its products or distribute cosmetics where animal testing is required by law.
The philosophy that Sioris follows is that products should be safe for the skin while also being safe for the environment.

We see brands claiming to be ‘clean’ all the time, but the term is not regulated in cosmetics. Where Sioris is different is that transparency and traceability are important in making every formula.

We can’t deny that Sioris has made being safe, clean, and sustainable a priority, but why are they making it look like they are 100% vegan?

Sioris Does Not Test on Animals?

Sioris was founded with the intention of never testing on animals, from ingredient sourcing to the final product. They are very clear on this fact, but we don’t see any certification to prove it.

What Is Sioris’ Cruelty-Free Status in 2023?

Here is a screenshot of Sioris’ official statement regarding its cruelty-free policies and vegan products, taken from its website:

Sioris Has No Cruelty-Free Certification

For a brand that is so clear on its stance on animal testing, it’s disappointing that Sioris still hasn’t gotten a cruelty-free certification.

Since the term “cruelty-free” is so unregulated, any brand claiming to be cruelty-free should have a certification to prove and uphold its claims.

Certification from Leaping Bunny is ideal – even more so than PETA – because it holds rigorous standards and does regular audits to ensure they are upheld

Leaping Bunny certification proves that:

  • No animal testing is conducted on the ingredients, formulas, or final products they sell.
  • No animal testing is conducted by the brand suppliers or on their ingredients or formulas.
  • No animal testing is done by someone else that the company paid for.
  • Any other form of testing (beyond ingredient and consumer safety), such as worker safety and environmental health, is considered and evaluated.

Sioris is Not Sold Where Animal Testing is Required By Law?

Sioris does not distribute any of its products to China or any country that requires animal testing on cosmetics by law.

China has a shocking track record. It is the country with the most animal testing globally, with over 20 million animals used per year.

Sioris is Not Vegan

Sioris really makes it seem like they are 100% vegan, but they aren’t quite there yet. If you can’t find The Vegan Society badge in the certified category, then the product is not vegan.

The only animal-derived ingredient Sioris uses is beeswax.

The only two products on the website that currently aren’t vegan are the Enriched by Nature cream and the More Than lip balm.

Sioris is Natural and Organic

Natural and organic is Sioris’ whole ethos. With this brand, you will know the exact percentage of natural and organic each product is.

Sioris is COSMOS-organic certified, and in every product description, you can find out an in-depth breakdown of each product.

You won’t find a more transparent breakdown of contents in a product from a skincare brand.

All products use a certain amount of synthetic ingredients in their formulas. Sioris is no exception but chooses to use better or clean synthetics.

If a synthetic ingredient is "clean," it means it is safe and non-toxic for us. Its purpose is to preserve the stability of a beauty formulation.

A few naturally-derived ingredients Sioris uses to enhance its cosmetics include:

  • Magnolia berries aren’t only rich in flavor. These berries are also rich in vitamins, amino acids, and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps reduce redness and puffiness, leaving the skin dewy and lumino
  • Citrons have three times more vitamin C than your average lemon. This sour citrus has anti-aging properties, reducing hyperpigmentation and inflammation and rejuvenating fatigued skin.
  • Watson pomelos are a beloved seasonal fruit rich in vitamin C, calcium, potassium, and citric acid. By preventing skin damage from harmful free radicals, Watson pomelos give your skin a youthful appearance

Sioris Has No Allergen-Free Ranking

Sioris doesn’t have any products with an allergen-free ranking on Skin Safe.

Since Sioris doesn’t have any ingredient policies officially available, you will need to read ingredient lists carefully for allergens and harmful ingredients.

Reading the ingredient list is crucial because Sioris is not 100% hypoallergenic or non-comedogenic, and they do not claim to be.

However, certain products specifically address these concerns, so make sure you buy what your skin needs.

The EU/UK Have Stricter Ingredient Regulations

We don’t want to scare you, but you HAVE to read up on any product’s ingredient list before you make a purchase – especially if you live within the United States. The reason why will shock you.

The FDA has only banned or restricted 11 harmful chemicals from cosmetics within the country. Europe and the UK, on the other hand, have banned 1,328!

Luckily, Sioris sets a great example of what true clean beauty is meant to be, and you shouldn’t have to worry about any serious hidden nasties in its products.

With skincare and cosmetics, you want to avoid these ingredients:

  • Ethoxylated ingredients (PPG, PEG, and polysorbate)
  • Ethanolamine compounds (DEA, MEA, and TEA)
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, aka teflon®)
  • Propylene glycol (pg) & butylene glycol
  • DMDM Hydantoin
  • Triclosan

Sioris Is Highly Sustainable and Ethical

Most of Sioris’ attention is put towards sustainability, but they do regularly sponsor the Korean Animal Welfare Association Corp.

It's no secret that the world has a huge waste problem, and cosmetic brands only make it worse by using unsustainable packaging and harmful ingredients.

Sioris takes environmental accountability by:

  • Being a member of 1% for the planet
  • Developing formulas that are kinder to the environment.
  • Working on sustainable packaging developments.
  • Ensuring that all plastic containers they use are recyclable.
  • Encouraging consumers to recycle their products.
  • Avoiding extra packaging and only using sustainable or recycled materials (paper) when needed.
  • Prohibiting synthetic microbeads that pollute our waters and harm marine life.
  • Using sustainably sourced paper (FSC certified) to create its packaging.
  • Sponsoring Green Korea United, a Korean environmental protection organization, to contribute towards the conservation of nature
  • Ingredients are sourced locally and seasonally
  • Donating 1% of sales from the ‘My First Essener’ to Forest for Life

Final Thoughts

Sioris appeals to customers who want to know what’s going in their products and where it’s coming from. If you’re looking for a brand prioritizing clean and sustainable products, look no further.

But one area they are lacking is their cruelty-free and vegan policies. Sioris is SO close to being 100% vegan, and it looks like they are phasing their only animal-derived ingredient.

And while Sioris has gotten certifications for everything from being vegan, clean, and organic, Sioris still hasn’t gotten any certification for its cruelty-free policy. Definitely strange, considering they’ve covered all their other bases.

Overall, definitely a brand to keep your eyes on. It looks very likely that they will be 100% vegan and certified cruelty-free soon (especially with a bit more push from us as customers!)
